Dear Upper Moreland Community,

It is with deep sadness that I share with you today the passing of our beloved high school teacher and coach, Mr. Doug Smith. Doug has been on leave this school year.

Mr. Smith was more than an educator and coach; he was a mentor, a source of encouragement, and a positive presence in the lives of so many students and colleagues. His dedication, kindness, and passion for teaching and coaching made a lasting impact that will not be forgotten.

This tragic event has a significant impact on our entire school community. We understand that each person will process this sad news differently. As a school staff, we will focus on supporting our students and each other as we process this very sad news.

Please know that our counselors are available to meet with students and staff who may need help in processing this difficult news. If you have any concerns about your child, please call the guidance office. Those numbers are below.

We ask that parents and guardians listen to their children. If you feel it is appropriate, we encourage you to discuss with them their feelings and reactions to this tragedy. Sudden death is always painful to understand, and your children may experience signs of stress. These may include:

  • Difficulty sleeping

  • Inability to concentrate

  • Irritability

  • Increased aggression

  • Thoughts of death or dying

  • Isolation

  • Withdrawing from normal activities and friends

  • Guilt

  • Fearfulness and worries

  • Use of alcohol or other drugs

I ask that you please keep Doug Smith’s family, the high school staff and students in your thoughts and prayers.

With sadness,

Dr. Sue Elliott
