Diversity, Equity, Inclusion & Belonging Committee
UMSD strives always to act in accordance with established and applicable law and the following statement should be read and interpreted in that context. By doing so, UMSD will ensure that it is not engaging in any educational or employment practices that constitute discrimination against or favoritism towards any group of people. To that end, UMSD always has and will continue to hire the most qualified employees regardless of race, sex or other status. We will continue, in consultation with legal counsel, to review the intent and impact of changes at the federal and state level and make further adjustments as needed.
UMTSD Equity Statement | 2024
As a school community focused on preparing our students for a global world, Upper Moreland welcomes and celebrates diversity and is committed to creating an equitable and inclusive environment. Equity cultivates a sense of belonging which values and honors each individual for who they are and what they bring to our community. By appreciating the unique gifts and experiences each child and adult brings, our schools become learning communities where all individuals thrive intellectually, socially, and emotionally. This creates a climate of belonging and inclusion in which everyone feels safe, valued, and heard.
As a learning community, we acknowledge that inequities within our system and the larger society in which we live, create challenges and obstacles to the equitable space we are committed to creating. Equitable practices are intentional actions to identify and eliminate barriers and systemic inequities to ensure that respect and dignity are being shown to students, families, and staff of diverse races, religions, ethnicities, classes, sexual orientations, immigration status, genders, gender identities, languages, abilities, and income. These intentional actions create an open and welcoming school community where diverse voices are heard, represented, and empowered.
To reach this goal, the journey will review and integrate many factors, including policies and procedures, professional growth and training, personnel, finances, facilities, educational programming, partnerships, and family engagement. To ensure continuous growth, ongoing evaluation of district progress with DEIB principles will be conducted annually. Our commitment to creating an equitable and inclusive school environment at Upper Moreland is essential for fostering a community of belonging where diverse individuals can thrive.
