This month, UMMS students came together to provide 35 families with food baskets for the holiday season through their annual Turkey Trot Food Drive. 🦃
Led by Student Council, who worked hard to tally, organize, & manage the drive, students celebrated their collective efforts on Wednesday with a day of fun & teamwork. Check out some photos from their culminating Turkey Trot, including a fun run/walk, gym activities, & Minute to Win It games.
We're #UMProud of our students for demonstrating kindness & leadership this holiday season! ☺

Yesterday, UMMS welcomed guest speaker Mike Vecchio from the Travis Manion Foundation in honor of Veterans Day.
Mr. Vecchio spoke with our 8th-graders about the importance of character, leadership, & service. Through the stories of veterans Travis Manion & Brendan Looney, he shared the Foundation's motto, "If Not Me, Then Who?"
We’re grateful for this powerful reminder to lead by example & for the Foundation’s mission to build stronger communities. Thank you, TMF, for inspiring our students!

This week, #ProjectLIT Book Club kicked off its 7th year at UMMS with our first read, "A Work in Progress," - a story about a young boy's journey toward self-acceptance, using art to express his emotions.
During our activity, club members went around to four emotion-themed stations - happy, sad, angry, embarrassed - spending a few minutes drawing, doodling, or coloring what that emotion looks or feels like to them. We finished the activity with a gallery walk, seeing how others visualized each emotion.
Some reviews from this month's meeting included:
⭐ "Loved mixing with different people!"
⭐ "The community coming together is awesome!"
⭐ "The book was so inspirational"
⭐ "My group's discussion was great"
⭐ "The FOOD and the BLOOKET were my favorite!"
⭐ "We had so much fun"
⭐ "Pizza AND cookies?! Yes, please!"
⭐ "I loved the trivia game!"
Sound like something you're interested in? Stay tuned for our next book & meeting reveal in the next few weeks. Information will be shared via our weekly e-newsletters!

This week at UMMS, Mr. Klocek’s 8th-grade Humanities classes explored the American Dream through a creative storytelling activity. As part of their Interdependence & Diversity unit, students tackled dense, challenging texts, breaking them down by Listing, Grouping, & Labeling key ideas. They then used this structure to create "Struggle for the American Dream" stories, focusing on the skill of simplifying complex ideas for their audience.
Students made the assignment fun by dressing up in costumes, and many groups brought humor into their presentations to keep their classmates engaged & entertained throughout the storytelling sessions.

Our schools were filled with PINK today as students & staff came together for the 10th Annual Pink Out, showing support for those impacted by breast cancer during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. 🎗️
Big shout out to the UMHS Field Hockey team for leading this initiative & raising money for breast cancer charities through their t-shirt sales! 🙌
Don't forget to join us tonight @ 7 PM as we continue our Pink Out at our football game against Wissahickon! 🐻 🏈 #UMProud #BreastCancerAwareness

UMMS students celebrated Constitution Day by exploring the history of Voting Rights and how they’ve expanded over time. They learned about who could vote in 1787 and analyzed key amendments that granted voting rights to people of all races, ethnicities, & genders. After their lessons, students engaged with the material in fun ways like hands-on activities & games!

Welcome back, Upper Moreland! We were thrilled to see so many smiling faces last week on the First Day of School.

Last week, UMMS welcomed incoming 6th-graders during their Orientation Day! 🎉
🌟 New 6th-graders met with current 7th & 8th-grade student council members who shared helpful insights about life at middle school. Student leaders covered topics generated by students & families from last year’s 5th-grade visitation & throughout the summer.
📅 Students reviewed their schedules, toured the building, & visited their classrooms. At the end of the tour, they received a Welcome 6th Grade BEAR Pride T-shirt 🐻💜 (BEAR = Belong, Empathy, Achieve, Resiliency)
👨👩👧👦 While the students were exploring, families met with the principal for a presentation about the transition to middle school. The Montgomery County Detective’s Office also provided valuable information on the safe and responsible use of social media.

THANK YOU to the UMMS HSA for their generous gift to our Middle School athletic department—a golf cart!
This new addition will help our team navigate the 23 acres of fields on the Middle School grounds, ensuring equipment is quickly transported so that games and practices are set up on time. It will also allow our nurse to reach any injured students quickly & efficiently.

Sophia, a Junior at UMHS, organized an incredible Summer Olympics event for students aged 5-21 in the Extended School Year (ESY) program. The day was full of fun as we celebrated everyone's abilities!
The event kicked off at the Olympic Museum, where students learned all about the history of the Games. Next was a Pass the Torch relay race, where students demonstrated teamwork & speed. Adapted sports like seated tennis allowed everyone to compete - similar to Wheelchair Tennis in the Paralympics.
Students cheered as classmates tried their hand at the long jump & shot put. For the art lovers, there was the option to create Olympics-themed paintings & participate in artistic gymnastics. It was a day all about having fun and feeling proud of what everyone could achieve!

We're excited to announce the opening of a Little Library at UMMS! 📚 Thanks to the hard work of Talitha Lovelady from Mrs. Hanssen's 6th-grade Gifted Seminar, this wonderful addition to our Kindness Rocks garden is now available for students to enjoy.
The Little Library was Talitha's passion project and was generously supported by a $1,000 grant from the Middle School HSA. Made out of recycled milk jugs, the library is not only environmentally friendly, but it's also durable & long-lasting. During the ceremony, Talitha & her classmates stocked the library with a variety of books, from Elementary level to Young Adult, all stamped with a personalized design.
Congratulations to Talitha & everyone involved in making this project a reality! 🎉 Thank you for enriching our school community!

We had an incredible day at the Special Olympics yesterday! 🏅 Our UM athletes represented us proudly as we joined 11 other school districts at Hatboro-Horsham for a day filled with running, jumping, & throwing events. Before the games, we held a clap-out in all our schools so students could cheer the athletes on as they headed to the competition.
Special Olympics is a highlight of our year, and we're so proud of all the students who participated! 🌟 Thank you to those who helped to prepare our students for this special day and to all the parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, & family friends who came out to cheer for our athletes.
