This week, 4th-graders at UMIS enjoyed a field trip to Churchville Nature Center where they participated in many environmental education activities, including the following:
🐸 Going on a nature hike to a swamp and discussing the effects that communities can play on that habitat
💧 Testing the reservoir water samples to determine its health
🔬 Searching for pond life and then examining and identifying those creatures in the science lab
The hands-on science activities brought the environmental education standards to life for the students, and many can't wait to bring their families back to Churchville for another visit!

Yesterday was out-of-this-world! 🌘 Students & staff stepped outside together at dismissal to experience the eclipse at its peak 😎#UMProud #TotalEclipse

This morning @ UMIS, Ms. Martz's 4th-graders learned about the total solar eclipse. Students made eclipse pinhole viewers and modeled the eclipse using two different-sized balls, representing the moon and the sun. They observed that when the smaller moon is aligned with the earth, it can appear the same size as the larger sun. This alignment causes the moon to eclipse the sun! 🌑☀ #UMProud #SolarEclipse

Each year, the Rendell Center for Civics and Civic Engagement hosts an essay competition for 4th & 5th-grade students enrolled in public, private, parochial school, or home study programs across the Commonwealth. This year, over 250 essay applications were submitted, and an essay written jointly by two students from Mrs. Gilman's 5th-grade class was selected as a finalist. The topic of the essay was for students to explain the First Amendment and its importance to Americans and indicate which freedom they believe was most important and why.
Eleven schools were invited to present their essays as finalists at the Constitution Center in Philadelphia. Yesterday, Mrs. Gilman's class presented their essay through an interactive commercial and answered questions about the First Amendment from the panel of judges. Afterward, Mrs. Gilman's class toured the Constitution Center Museum and viewed an interactive theater production about the history of the United States.
The judges from the Rendell Center awarded Mrs. Gilman's class 3rd place, winning $500 to enhance civics education at the Intermediate School. Congratulations to Mrs. Gilman's class for an excellent job and outstanding performance! You have made our school and district #UMProud! 👏
