Each year, the Rendell Center for Civics and Civic Engagement hosts an essay competition for 4th & 5th-grade students enrolled in public, private, parochial school, or home study programs across the Commonwealth. This year, over 250 essay applications were submitted, and an essay written jointly by two students from Mrs. Gilman's 5th-grade class was selected as a finalist. The topic of the essay was for students to explain the First Amendment and its importance to Americans and indicate which freedom they believe was most important and why. Eleven schools were invited to present their essays as finalists at the Constitution Center in Philadelphia. Yesterday, Mrs. Gilman's class presented their essay through an interactive commercial and answered questions about the First Amendment from the panel of judges. Afterward, Mrs. Gilman's class toured the Constitution Center Museum and viewed an interactive theater production about the history of the United States. The judges from the Rendell Center awarded Mrs. Gilman's class 3rd place, winning $500 to enhance civics education at the Intermediate School. Congratulations to Mrs. Gilman's class for an excellent job and outstanding performance! You have made our school and district #UMProud! 👏 #CivicEngagement #CitizenshipChallenge

Exciting news @ UMIS! 🎉 Two outstanding students from Ms. Gilman's 5th-grade class are Rendell Center Citizenship Challenge finalists! John Albert and Robert Marino's powerful essay about the importance of the First Amendment earned them a chance to compete at the National Constitution Center in January. Ms. Gilman's entire class will head down to the Constitution Center to work as a team and give a creative presentation on the winning essay for a chance to win $1,000 for UMIS. Congratulations to John and Robert, and best of luck to Ms. Gilman's class on bringing their essay to life next month! 👏 #UMproud #CitizenshipChallenge #CivicEngagement

We concluded the First Trimester at UMIS with our Circle of Excellence ceremony last Friday. During the assembly, we recognized our students who exemplify academic success, social responsibility, and citizenship. Students took the stage to discuss the pillars of ROAR: Respect, Ownership, Attitude, and Responsibility, symbolized by the lighting of candles. The event featured performances by student musicians, a song and dance routine by Ms. Hunsicker's 5th-grade class, and a rendition of the UMIS school song performed by our 3rd-graders. Calvin Grasso, a UMIS 3rd-grader, received a special award for his exceptional community service and dedication to "Make Every Kid Happy" during the holidays. 🎁 For the last two years, Calvin has been organizing a toy drive in partnership with the Upper Moreland Township Police Department, benefiting Toys for Tots. We are SO impressed by all the remarkable achievements of our students! 🤩 #UMProud #CircleofExcellence
