Mrs. J. Brunner

Counselor’s Corner

Judy Brunner, Guidance Counselor

During the final quarter of our school year, we will be focusing on the virtues of Honesty/Trust and Citizenship.  Honesty is something you are.  Trust is something you have.  Although they are different character traits, honesty and trust are interrelated.  Children trust others when they are honest.  In turn, children tell the truth when they trust.  Honest, trusting children …
  • Tell the truth despite consequences
  • Voice their opinions in a kind, thoughtful way
  • “Tell on” someone only when necessary
  • show and share their feelings
  • know their classmates and teacher care and want the best for them
  • feel and react without guilt
  • express themselves positively as well as critically

Through this school year, we have focused on Responsibility, Respect, and Caring.  When we focus on all of the virtues including Honesty and Trust, we are encouraging our children to be good citizens.  Citizenship will also be a focus during this final quarter.

Citizenship is ….

  • Having good manners and using kind words
  • Obeying rules and respecting authority
  • Accepting responsibility for your actions
  • What you do to make your home, school, neighborhood, and community better places

We appreciate your support at home in helping our school community implement our Character Education Program this year.  The activities we provided helped build a sense of community in our school, as well as reinforced the importance of positive virtues for school and everyday life.

UMPS Welcomes Children’s Author Alexander Stadler On June 6, 2008

On Friday June 6th, the students of the Primary School will have the opportunity to spend some time with children’s author and illustrator, Alexander Stadler.  Mr. Stadler, a resident of Philadelphia, will share the work of authors and illustrators that inspired him when he was a young reader.  He will also point out secrets from the texts of his books and reveal author’s craft. During the assemblies, the students will have an opportunity to create a story as Mr. Stadler illustrates it.  The illustrations will be left with the school for classes to use as part of discussions and activities. Mr. Stadler will also spend time answering the student’s questions and signing books.  Students have the opportunity to preorder books until April 30th.  This form was sent home through the Wednesday folder and the e-Communicator.  The form is available at: http://umtsd.org/Primary/author/alex_stadler.htm
In anticipation of his arrival, all of the Primary School will be engaged in an author study.  Within the classroom, teachers will be sharing Mr. Stadler’s books and biography while working on extension activities.  Some of our specialist teachers will also be working with his books and connecting the topic to their specialty area.
The Primary School Staff are very excited to be able to have a local children’s author come to share his knowledge with our students.  We would like to thank the HSA and Mrs. Emerick for providing the funds for this program.
