Student Referrals: A completed Discipline Referral Form must accompany any student referred to the office for disciplinary reasons. There are emergency situations when a staff member must remove a disruptive student from the classroom and get him/her to the office. In these situations, staff members are still expected to follow up with the referral form as soon as possible. Intervention and disciplinary action will take place after the form has been received at the office. Lunch and recess aides complete "white cards" on disruptive students. These "white cards" will be forwarded to the classroom teacher to review and evaluate. The teacher may elect to discuss the incident with the student(s), reprimand the student(s), notify the parents about the situation, refer the situation to the management assistant, and/or give the student(s) a teacher supervised recess detention. If the teacher elects to refer the situation to the management assistant the teacher needs to complete a Discipline Referral Form and send the student and the form to the office. The "white card" is not an acceptable reporting form for the office and these are not sent home to the parents. If the teacher elects to give the student(s) detention, the teacher needs to notify the office of the detention and needs to notify the detention room monitor. General Guidelines: 1. Students may be referred to the recess detention room by the principal or management assistant. 2. Referrals of students who are to have recess detention will be placed in the monitor’s mailbox each day. Teachers will also receive copies of the referrals. 3. Classroom teachers are to send referred students to the monitor for lunch recess period. 4. The detention monitor is to have each student complete a "Success Plan”. These are to be attached to the original referral and filed in the Detention Log. 5. Students are to remain absolutely quiet in the detention room and must remain seated. Trips to the bathroom or water fountain are to be discouraged unless it is an emergency. 6. Students in the detention room must be supervised at all times. Never leave students unattended for any reason. 7. Recess detention will be held in the IST workroom in the main office. Students who have recess detention are not to participate in any recess activities for the day. 8. The monitor is to escort students back to their classrooms after recess detention. 9. After school detention will be held as necessary. Parents of students for after school detention are notified in advance so they can make transportation arrangements. Parents are required to come into the school building to pick their child up from after school detention unless the office has approved other arrangements. The detention monitor will be notified of any exceptions. 10. After school detentions will be held in the office or library. 11. The detention monitor will be responsible to supervise any student who may have an In-School suspension during their scheduled workday. Classroom teachers are responsible to provide class work for students who have in-school suspension. 12. Teachers are required to provide class work and assignments for students receiving out-of-school suspension. 13. Disciplinary Referral Forms are not to be used for students who consistently do not complete homework. Special procedures and guidelines for dealing with these students will be established at the beginning of the school year. |
