Make a Diffence in a Child’s Life!

 Be a Bear Cub Buddy!

How do you Become a Bear Cub Buddy?

In September, the Bear Cub Buddy Committee, also known as the Mentoring Committee, will send out a sign up sheet which will be recruiting volunteers who may want to work one-on-one with a student.  Once the recruitment is done, there will be a gathering of mentors to review the program and understand the responsibilities involved in being a Bear Cub Buddy.

Who is a Bear Cub Buddy?

A bear cub buddy, or mentor, is an adult who makes time for a child, cares about the child, and believes in the child.  This adult is a good listener and communicates on a level the bear cub, or mentee, can understand.  The Bear Cub Buddy seeks to build the mentee’s self-esteem and does not act in a judgmental way.  The Bear Cub Buddy is committed and meets at least twice a month with the assigned bear cub.

How do we determine who our
bear cubs are?

Bear cubs are selected by teachers and/or support staff.  Bear cubs may have low self-esteem, and may not have much support in their environment.  Bear Cubs may have trouble relating to peers and adults and may seek attention in negative ways.  Sometimes the adult who recommends the child to be a Bear Cub just has “a feeling” that the child would benefit from this kind of positive one-on-one experience.

Upper Moreland Primary School’s Bear Cub Buddy Program

This year, a group of teachers worked hard to pilot our mentoring program.  These teachers shared their time with a special child throughout the entire year.  The children were selected to be mentees, or bear cubs, by our Child Study Team.  This year we would appreciate your input, as well.

When choosing a child to be considered to be a Bear Cub, please take into consideration the following:  Does this child have support from home?  Does the child have difficulty connecting positively with others?  Does the child have a low self esteem?  Does the child seem sad and/or angry?  If you are able to say yes to several of these questions, please share your recommendation below.  Thank you for sharing your input.  We hope you would consider being a Bear Cub Buddy to a child who may benefit from this positive interaction.
