Programs
and Volunteer Opportunities |
|
The following is a description of some of the programs and volunteer opportunities available through the UMIS H.S.A. If you see something of interest, please contact any officer or committee chair to get more information or to volunteer. Click here for the H.S.A. Volunteer Form. Complete the form, and send it in to school with your child. Your contribution does make a difference! |

| Two parents from each class are needed to be responsible for making phone calls in the event of an early dismissal or other emergency. This is a very important job and you must be available to make calls when necessary. If you agree to be a calling parent you also have the opportunity to plan and participate in one of your child’s classroom activities (Halloween, Holiday or End of Year). | ||
| Decorating: | The H.S.A. decorates areas of the Intermediate School with seasonal or school themed displays. Areas of the school that we are permitted to decorate include the entryway near the Cafetorium and the stairway glass. | |
| Directory: | Every family who joins the H.S.A. receives a copy of the annual Student Directory. The chairperson of this committee collects, organizes and types the information for the directory and oversees publication. | |
| Easy Money: | The H.S.A. conducts several ongoing fundraisers that include General Mills Box Tops for Education, Funding Factory (ink jet cartridges), eScrip, Campbell Soup labels and special retailer fundraising programs (Target). In addition to the chairpersons, parent volunteers are needed for organizing, counting and mailing items. | |
| Enrichment: | This after-school educational program is offered to all UMIS students and offers a wide variety of classes. The classes run for six weeks starting in late January. The H.S.A. needs volunteers for registration and daily monitoring of student dismissal and pick-up. | |
| Field Day: | This special day sponsored by the UMIS Phys. Ed department offers athletic activities celebrating sportsmanship and team spirit. The H.S.A. needs volunteers for t-shirt order/distribution, activity coordination and snack delivery. | |
| Fifth Grade Special Events: | The fifth graders have many special activities throughout the year including the Fifth Grade Picnic and Promotion. The fifth grade students raise money for a charitable donation and class gift through Penny Drive, bake sales and hoagie sales. In addition, all fifth graders receive a yearbook. Volunteers are needed for each of these fifth grade activities/events. | |
| Fundraising: | The UMIS is a non-profit organization and all money raised is used to benefit our students. We traditionally hold two fundraisers: Fall and Spring – and offer products such as Gianni’s Pizza, Cherrydale Farms and Kidstuff Entertainment Books. We plan to vary our fundraisers to include other options such as Demo Night, in which local vendors demonstrate their products and offer items for raffle. Our Spring Fair is also a fundraising event. Volunteers are always needed to help with these activities. | |
| Hospitality: | The H.S.A. hosts many events throughout the year in which food items are purchased, donated, set-up and served. We periodically need volunteers to bake items and/or serve food at a refreshment table or hospitality event. The events that the Hospitality committee is responsible for include Meet the Teacher Nights (refreshment tables), Welcome Back Luncheon for teachers at the beginning of the school year, Grandparents Day (refreshment table) and Teacher Appreciation Breakfast. | |
| Market Day: | The H.S.A. runs monthly sales of restaurant-quality frozen food products. Volunteers are needed to unpack and distribute food to customers. | |
| Membership: | This committee coordinates the H.S.A. membership drive at the beginning of each school year. Membership dues are collected and a list of members is compiled for the annual phone/address directory. | |
| Original Artworks: | The H.S.A. coordinates this program that offers products such as mugs, hats, tote bags with your child’s original artwork. The chairperson works with the Original Artworks company representative and the UMIS art teacher to coordinate this program. Volunteers are needed for sorting and mailing artwork as well as distribution of the finished products. | |
| Plant Sale: | The plant sale allows students to purchase flowers at reasonable prices that can be given as gifts for Mother’s Day. Volunteers are needed to unload and set up the flowers and to help sell plants on the day of the sale. | |
| Programs/Assemblies: | This committee selects and coordinates all student programs and assemblies throughout the school year. | |
| Roller Skating Parties: | This committee organizes the monthly skating parties held at Palace Roller Rink. | |
| School Board Representative: | The meetings of the Upper Moreland Twp. School Directors are of concern to every parent. H.S.A. parent representatives are asked to attend some or all school board committee and full board meetings. The reps then report and clarify information at the monthly H.S.A. meeting. |
|
| School Sign: | The parent volunteer for this committee makes sure that the sign outside the Intermediate School front entrance is updated with pertinent school/H.S.A. information each month. | |
| School Store: | The H.S.A. sponsors the school store on Mondays of each week. Students may purchase supplies needed for schoolwork or special projects. Sometimes special Upper Moreland merchandise is available. Volunteers are needed to operate the school store during lunchtime. | |
| Student Directory: | A yearly directory is compiled and published each year by the H.S.A. | |
| Spring Fair | The H.S.A. hosts a fair each year in May. The fair features games, prizes, activities, raffles and food. Volunteers are needed to assist with all aspects of the fair. | |
| Sunshine: | The H.S.A. recognizes when a member of our school community has an illness, death or special event such as marriage, birth or retirement. | |
