The physical education program has been designed to enhance the physical, intellectual, emotional, and social development of participants. Through participation in physical education, students will develop components of fitness and a variety of lifetime sport skills. The program is organized so each student has the opportunity to select and participate in a variety of indoor and outdoor sports, lifetime activities and personal physical fitness programs. Course offerings are reviewed each year and modified as needed to meet the needs of the students. The Presidential Physical Fitness Test is administered at the beginning and end of each year to assess current fitness levels and to assist students in setting and achieving individual goals. Physical education is required each year and each student must meet a minimum requirement of 2 credits before graduation. Failures or incomplete grades will necessitate attendance in summer school or double scheduling the following year. Failures must be remediated prior to graduation. The Health program is designed to enhance the physical, intellectual, emotional and social development of all students. Learning opportunities are provided to develop the knowledge and skills necessary to promote and maintain lifelong health, safety and wellness. Health education is required in each grade level and a minimum requirement of 2 credits are needed prior to graduation. PHYSICAL EDUCATION 9,10, 11, 12 Credits: 0.5 each year
HEALTH – GRADE 9 Credit: 0.5 The ninth grade course builds on content and skills obtained through the middle school program. Physical fitness, human sexuality and substance abuse are the topics covered in this course. The physical fitness unit focuses on the skill and health related components of fitness, as well as developing a personal fitness program. The unit on human sexuality concentrates on a review of the male and female reproductive systems, STD’s and STI’s abstinence and decision making. The substance abuse unit covers information related to steroids, amphetamines and barbiturates. DRIVER THEORY & CPR – GRADE 10 Credit: 0.5 The tenth grade program focuses on Driver Education and C.P.R.. Driver theory course will provide the students with an understanding of the state and federal vehicle codes as well as general knowledge related to the automobile. Additional topics include: operation of the engine, vehicle maintenance, driver safety and responsibility. The financial responsibilities of purchasing, owning, operation, insuring and maintaining an automobile will be presented. C.P.R. instruction focuses on identifying life threatening emergencies and the proper response for choking, rescue breathing and cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Guidelines for this course are based on the American Red Cross standards. HEALTH - GRADE 11 Credit: 0.5 The eleventh grade course focuses on understanding health concepts and skills that will assist the students when making positive choices that promote personal, family and community health. The content areas that will be discussed include nutrition, sexuality, birth control methods, substance abuse and mental health. HEALTH - GRADE 12 Credit: 0.5 The twelfth grade program focuses on the knowledge and skills needed to avoid or modify behavior related to the leading causes of death, illness and injury during youth and adulthood. Topics of discussion include: the effects of substance abuse on society, non-infectious diseases and disorders and infectious diseases.
GRADUATION PROJECT GRADUATION PROJECT Credit: 1.0 Seniors will be scheduled during the first or second semester and the project must be completed during that time period. The choice of semester to which each senior will be assigned is determined by the physical education schedule. One credit will be awarded for the successful completion of the project and the project presentation. |
