11 College Preparatory LIST OF REQUIRED SUMMER READING |
| To continue the development of critical reading skills necessary for success, students entering the eleventh grade College Preparatory English program are expected to read two literary works over the summer. At least one work must be from the following list: | |
| |
|
| Title | Author |
| The Handmaid’s Tale | Margaret Atwood |
| Cold Mountain | Charles Frazier |
| The Bean Tree | Barbara Kingsolver |
| Friday Night Lights | H.G. Bissinger |
| My Antoniá | Willa Cather |
| Power of One | Bryce Courtenay |
| How the Garcia Sisters Lost Their Accent | Julia Alvarez |
| The Shining | Stephen King |
| The second book students must read can be their choice, but it is recommended that the work be by a contemporary author. Many of the local bookstores contain sections that include recommended books for summer reading. Also, any works from a best-seller list will be appropriate. Students will be asked to complete a demonstration of their reading comprehension at the beginning of the school year by their English teacher. |
