Did You Know...

Suicide is the leading cause of death amoung adolescents.  The rate of suicide for 15 to 24 year-olds has tripled in the last 60 years.  Everyday, 14 young people from ages 15 to 24 will complete suicide (That is one teen suicide every 100 minutes).

Things to Look For:

» Threats of suicide - direct or indirect
» Verbal hints such as "I won't be around much longer"
» Putting affairs in order (for example, throwing away favorite possessions)
» Sudden cheerfulness after periods of depression
» Risk-taking behavior such as aggression, gun play, and substance abuse
» Self-destructive behavior such as cutting into traffic while driving
» Sudden changes in physical habits, appearance, personality, friends, or behavior
» Death or suicide themes in art
» Hallucinations or bizarre thoughts

What You Should Do:

» It is important to talk to the person about how they are feeling.
» Make sure your friends knows they are important to you.  Remember that you alone can't keep your friend from hurting himself or herself.
» Never keep your friends suicidal thoughts a secret.  You have to tell an adult if you want to help your friend.
