Overview
Students are introduced to the concepts
of life science as they investigate
different kinds of seeds, the system
which defines plant structure, and
factors that affect plant growth.

Learning Expectation
Understand
that characteristics of living things help to identify and classify
them.
- Develop a curiosity and interest in the plants that make up
their environment.
- Identify characteristics of living things.
- Recognize that living things are made up of parts that have
specific functions.
- Sort and classify seeds by physical characteristics.
- Observe and record growth of plants over time.
- Observe and describe the purposes of plant structures.
- Explore the effects of environmental changes to plant growth.
- Organize and communicate observations through drawing and writing.
- Explain how humans depend on plants.
- Identify products derived from plants.
- Acquire the vocabulary associated with Earth materials.
- Use scientific thinking processes to conduct
investigations and build explanations: observing, communicating, and
comparing.
- Acquire skills to use tools and scientific techniques to make
better observations.
- Understand science safety and follow safe practices during investigation

Content: Earth
Science
Develop students’ understanding
of the
characteristics of earth materials,
objects in the sky, and
changes
in the sky.
- Plants have basic needs, air,
water, nutrients, and light.
- Each plant has different
structures
that serve specific
functions
in growth.
- A seed will sprout when
the environment is able to
support its growth.
