Overview
Students will investigate the properties of matter:  physical characteristics, three states of matter, how matter moves, determination of balance, and the basic energy sources that effect change on matter.  Students will explore moving matter more efficiently using simple machines.

Learning Expectations:
Understand the properties of objects and materials

  • Develop an understanding of the physical characteristics for varied types of matter.
  • Observe differences between physical and chemical changes.
  • Develop an understanding of the three states of matter – solid, liquid, and gas.
  • Observe and describe how matter changes from one state to another.
  • Explore different types of energy sources.
  • Explore sources for and identify different types of energy.
  • Observe and describe different types of motion.
  • Compare movement of matter using simple machines.
  • Demonstrate the use of basic tools, simple materials, and techniques to safely solve problems.
  • Organize and communicate observations through drawing and writing.
  • Acquire vocabulary associated with science.
  • Use scientific thinking processes to conduct investigations and build explanations: observing, communicating, and comparing.
  • Understand science safety and follow safe practices during investigations

Assessments:

  • Lab experiments
  • Performance assessments
  • Reflective journals
  • Teacher created assessments
  • End of unit projects
  • Rubrics
  • Checklists
  • Homework/Class work
  • Teacher observations

Content: Physical Science
Develop students’ understanding of the physical characteristics of matter

  • Many different objects and shapes can be made to balance.
  • Objects that move around exhibit a rotational motion.
  • Some objects exhibit forces that attract.
  • Balance is determined by location of the center of gravity.
  • All matter exists in one of three states, solid, liquid, gas.
