Overview
Students investigate the properties of Earth materials.  Students explore the composition and properties of various rocks and minerals, uses of Earth materials, and causes of land formations.

Learning Expectations:
Understand the properties and uses of rocks and minerals.
Understand Earth’s surface changes over time.

  • Gain understanding with the environmental factors that cause landforms.
  • Conduct controlled experiments to determine composition of earth material.
  • Determine that minerals are foundational to all Earth materials.
  • Gain experience with a variety of Earth materials and their uses.
  • Organize and analyze data from experiments and investigations with rocks and minerals.
  • Identify and sort earth materials according to a classification key.
  • Observe and describe changes in Earth materials over time.
  • Acquire vocabulary associated with geological study.
  • Exercise language, math, and social studies skills in the context of geological investigations.
  • Use scientific thinking processes to conduct investigations and build explanations:  observing, communicating, comparing, and organizing.
  • Work collaboratively and use tools and scientific techniques to make better observations.
  • Understand science safety and follow safe practices during investigations.

Assessments:

  • Lab experiments
  • Performance assessments
  • Reflective journals
  • Teacher created assessments

Content:  Earth Science
Develop students’ understanding of the characteristics of Earth materials

  • The Earth’s crust is constantly changing from slow processes - rusting, weathering, and erosion or for rapid change processes – landslides, volcanic eruptions, and earthquakes.
  • Soil is composed of weathered rock and decomposed organic materials.
  • Soils have properties of color, texture, capacity to retain water, and ability to support the growth of many kinds of plants, including those in our food chain.
  • Earth materials have different properties which make them useful in different ways, such as building materials, source of fuel, or for growing plants we use as fuel.
