Purpose
The main function of the public school is to provide educational opportunities for all youth meeting the age limit for Commonwealth students. The need for formal education and a high school diploma is especially vital to students who are married or are parents as they assume the responsibility for the support of families. Therefore, no student whether married or unmarried, who is otherwise eligible to attend the schools to this district shall be denied an educational program solely because of pregnancy, childbirth, pregnancy-related disabilities, or actual or potential parenthood; nor shall a pregnant student under the age of 17 be excused from the requirements of the Compulsory Attendance Statute for reason of her pregnancy or maternity.

Authority
The Board's first obligation is to keep a married, expectant parent, parental, and/or pregnant student in school and in regular classes. A student may be excluded from school if a request is made and it is determined and certified by the appropriate professional (physician, psychiatrist, or psychologist) that continued attendance would endanger either the physical or mental health of the student.

The student shall be given the opportunity to participate in the most appropriate educational program. Placement must be based on the unique needs of the student as identified through counseling services of the school. However, maintaining school age married, expectant parent, parental, and/or pregnant student in a regular program may necessitate adaptive measures which may include the following:

  1. Counseling
  2. Special schedule and activities
  3. Adaptive physical education
  4. Individualized assignments
  5. Health services

There are several alternatives outside the regular classroom for the pregnant student which includes:

  1. Special school or class
  2. Homebound instructions when it is determined that continuation in school would endanger either the physical or mental health of the student
  3. Homebound instruction when it is determined that the pregnant student has developed a physical handicap or disability which would prevent her from attending school

The following information shall be offered to a student who, as a parent, is unable to attend school because of family responsibilities:

  1. The General Education Development Examination (GED)
  2. Evening schools
  3. Summer school
  4. Other alternative programs
