Title: Student Government

Purpose

The Board acknowledges the importance of offering students the opportunity to participate in self-government within the establishment of the schools.

Authority
Students shall have the right to organize, conduct meetings, elect officers and representatives and petition the Board.

The Board will recognize the Student Council for students in grades 6 to 12 and for the purpose of:

  1. developing student leadership,
  2. providing a learning experience in democratic decision making,
  3. offering another avenue toward the realization of the goals of this district, provided that the charter, constitution or by-laws of that organization have been:
a. duly adopted by the members of the student body it represents,
b. reviewed by the Superintendent or designee,
c. approved by the Board.

The Board shall appoint a qualified member of the faculty to serve as advisor to student government activities.

The Student Council shall be fully responsible for the planning, and organization, and or coordination of the following activities:

  1. its own government,
  2. for governments of other clubs,
  3. student social events, and
  4. activities and projects suggested by students.

All such activities must first be recommended by the principal and approved by the Superintendent or designee where appropriate.

The Student Council shall provide input into the following activities:

  1. development of a code of student behavior,
  2. curriculum development,
  3. dress code.

Delegation of Responsibility
The Superintendent shall establish procedures to implement this policy which:

  1. invites the participation of students in their formulation,
  2. assures that all students have equal access to the student government and an equal opportunity to vote and hold office,
  3. requires fiscal accountability and adherence to Board policy for all financial aspects of student government activity,
  4. establishes a committee of review composed of students, building administrators and teaching staff members to evaluate the effectiveness of student government activities toward meeting the goals established by this policy,
  5. specify consequences for non-compliance.
