Title: Smoking

Purpose
The Board recognizes that smoking presents a health hazard which can have serious consequences both for the smoker and the nonsmoker and is, therefore, of concern to the Board.

Definition
For the purposes of this policy, "smoking" shall mean all uses of tobacco.

Authority
In order to protect students and staff from the safety hazards of smoking and from an environment noxious to nonsmokers, the Board prohibits smoking by students in school buildings, on school grounds, on school buses, or at any school sponsored event.

Because of the exemplar role played by the adult members of the school community, the Board prohibits smoking by staff members and visitors during any part of the regular educational program of the school, and at any school sponsored event occurring in the school buildings, on school grounds, or on school buses.

Delegation of Responsibility
The Superintendent or designee shall develop procedures to implement this policy, which include:

  1. informing all students and staff members of the smoking regulations of this district,
  2. the monitoring of non-designated smoking areas,
  3. the health curriculum, instruction on potential hazards of the use of tobacco,
  4. adherence to Upper Moreland Township Smoking Ordinance #992.
