Purpose
The Board of Education acknowledges the usefulness of a system of computing grade point averages and class ranking for secondary graduates to inform students, parents and others of their relative academic placement among their peers under relatively similar circumstances.

Authority

  1. The Board of Education directs that the Superintendent of Schools establish and maintain a system of class ranking, by grade point average, for students in grades 9, 10, 11, and 12 which insures, at the least:
    a. all students shall be ranked in their grade
    b. class rank shall be computed by the final grade in subjects for which credit is awarded
    c. any two or more students whose computed grade point averages are identical shall be given the same rank. The rank of the student who immediately follows a tied position will be determined by the number of students preceding him/her and not by the rank of the person preceding him/her.
  2. In recognition of the heavier burden of certain work, grade point averages shall be weighted by awarding extra credit for each Honors or Advanced Placement course.
  3. A student’s grade point average and rank in class shall be entered on his/her record and shall be subject to the Board of Education’s policy on release of student records.

Responsibility

  1. The Board of Education further directs that the Superintendent of Schools, in cooperation with appropriate administrators and teachers, develop procedures for the computation of grade point averages and the assignment of rank in class to implement this policy.
