Title:

 Withdrawal From School

Date Adopted:

 May 14, 1979

Date Reviewed:

 February 24, 2004

Purpose
The Board affirms that, while statute requires attendance of each student only between the ages of 8 and 17, it is in the best interests of both students and the community that students complete the educational program that will equip them with skills and increase their chances for a successful and fulfilling life beyond the schools.

Authority
The Board directs that whenever a student wishes to withdraw, effort should be made to determine the underlying reason for such action and the resources of the district should be used to assist the student in reaching his or her career goals.  No student of compulsory school age will be permitted to withdraw without the written consent of a parent or legal guardian, or unless in compliance with school code regulations.

Delegation of Responsibility
The Superintendent shall develop procedures for withdrawal from school which:

  1. make counseling services available to any student who wishes to withdraw,
  2. make every effort to advise the student concerning future educational needs,
  3. approve the withdrawal of students attending college full time,
  4. inform the student of the tests for General Educational Development and the Certificate of Preliminary Education,
  5. assure the timely return of all district-owned supplies and equipment in the possession of the student.
