Title: Co-Curricular Activities

Purpose 
The Board believes that the goals and objectives of this district are best achieved by a diversity of learning experiences, some of which are more appropriately conducted outside the regular classroom curricular program of the school. 

  1. All learning experiences offered by the schools of this district, curricular and co-curricular, should be planned and integrated toward the attainment of the district's objectives. 

Definition 
For purposes of this policy, "co-curricular activities" shall be those activities which are sponsored or approved by the Board but are not offered for credit toward graduation.  Such activities shall ordinarily be:

  1. conducted wholly or partly outside the regular school day
  2. marked by student participation in the processes of initiation, planning, organization and execution
  3. available to all students who voluntarily elect to participate except that where eligibility requirements are necessary or desirable, the Board shall be so informed and must approve the establishment of eligibility standards before they may be operable.
  4. and shall ordinarily include: 
a. intramural sports for grades four through twelve. 
b. band, dramatics, choral activities, musicale and all similar non-athletic activities. 
c. clubs.

Authority 
The Board in cooperation with the Township shall make school facilities, supplies and equipment available and assign staff and/or community members for the support of a program of co-curricular activities.  

Any co-curricular activity shall be considered to be under the sponsorship of this Board when it has been:

  1. approved by the Board on recommendation of the Superintendent. 

The Board shall maintain the program of co-curricular activities at no cost to participating students, except that:

  1. students may assume all or part of the costs of travel and attendance at co-curricular events and trips and items of equipment for personal use such as athletic shoes, band instruments, etc. 

The Superintendent shall prepare procedures to implement a co-curricular program which shall: 

  1. assess the needs and interests of the students of this district.
  2. insure the provision of competent guidance and supervision of staff.
  3. guard against the exploitation of students.
  4. provide for a variety of experiences and a diversity of organizational models.
  5. provide for the continuing evaluation of the co-curricular program.
  6. insure that all co-curricular activities are open to all students in grades four through twelve and that all students are fully informed of the co-curricular opportunities open to them.
