Title: Programs for Gifted Students

Purpose 
In accordance with the Board's philosophy to develop the special abilities of each student, the Board requires that appropriate instructional programs be conducted to meet the needs of selected mentally gifted students of school age. 

Scope 
The framework for said programs shall encompass the following objectives:

  1. expansion of academic attainments and intellectual skills.
  2. stimulation of intellectual curiosity, independence and responsibility.
  3. development of originality and creativity.
  4. development of positive attitude toward self and others.
  5. development of desirable social and leadership skills.
  6. career exploration and awareness. 

Selection of candidates for this program shall be evidenced by:

  1. achievements in school work.
  2. scores on tests measuring intellectual ability and aptitude as determined by state mandates.
  3. the judgments of teachers, psychologists, administrators and/or supervisors familiar with the demonstrated ability of the pupil.

Responsibility 
Procedures shall be established by the Superintendent or designee for identifying children of demonstrated achievement or potential ability in any of the following areas, singly or in combination:

  1. general intellectual ability.
  2. specific academic aptitude.
  3. creative or productive thinking.
  4. visual and performing arts.
  5. planned courses of study may be developed in cooperation with other learning institutions, agencies or individuals.
