Title: Resource Materials

Purpose 
The Board shall provide instructional and evaluative materials to implement the district and school educational goals and objectives. 

Responsibility 
The Superintendent, or designee, after consultation with the instructional staff, shall be responsible for the selection, recommendation and maintenance of all resource materials.  Such materials shall include reference books, supplementary titles, audiovisual materials, software, maps, library books, and all other instructional material.  No adoption or change of materials shall be made without his/her recommendation except by a two-thirds vote of the Board.

 He/she shall develop selection procedures which:

  • Appoint appropriate administrative and instructional staff to recommend resource materials.
  • Insure that the Boards budgetary allotment for resource materials is efficiently spent and wisely distributed throughout the instructional program. 

Standards 
The Superintendent is directed to apply the following standards to the selection of resource materials:

  • Materials shall be suited to the varied interests, abilities, reading levels and maturation levels of the pupils to be served.
  • Wherever possible, materials shall provide major opposing views on controversial issues so that students may develop, under guidance, the practice of critical reading and thinking.
  • Wherever possible, materials shall represent the many religious, ethnic and cultural groups and their contribution to American heritage.
  • Materials shall be factually accurate and of genuine literary or artistic value.
  • Materials shall relate to, support and enrich the courses of study adopted by the Board.
  • A listing of resource materials shall be made available for the use of professional staff and for review by the public. 

Parents may exercise their right to review instructional materials used in learning programs by directing a written request to their child’s building principal, who will then coordinate a scheduled appointment to fulfill that request. 

Parents may exercise their right to request to have their child excused from specific instruction that conflicts with their religious beliefs.  This may be accomplished by directing a written request to their child’s building principal that includes an explanation of each specific conflict(s).  The building principal will then coordinate a scheduled appointment to review that request and communicate his/her findings to the Assistant Superintendent who will provide a written response.
