Title: Adoption of Textbooks

Purpose 
It is the responsibility of the Board to adopt all textbooks used as part of the instructional program of this district. 

Definition 
For purposes of this policy "textbooks" shall be defined as those books which are to be used as a major source of information in any class.

Responsibility 
The Superintendent shall be responsible for the selection and recommendation of textbooks for Board consideration.  No adoption or change of textbooks shall be made without his/her recommendation except by a two-thirds vote of the Board. 

Selection Guidelines 
The Superintendent or designee shall develop a plan for the selection of textbooks according to the following guidelines:               

  • The appropriate District curriculum committee shall participate in the selection process.
  • Textbooks shall be reviewed and updated as needed in accordance with the District Instructional Management Cycle. 
Standards for Approval
In considering the approval of any proposed textbook, the Board will evaluate its:

  • Suitability for the maturity level and instructional level of the students who will be using the book
  • Freedom from bias
  • Relationship to the curriculum
  • Manner of selection
  • Cost 
Record 
A list of all approved textbooks shall be prepared and maintained.  It shall be reviewed periodically by the Superintendent and made available for the information of members of the Board. 

Parents may exercise their right to review instructional materials by directing a written request to their child’s building principal, who will then coordinate a scheduled appointment to fulfill the request.
