Date Adopted: August 14, 1978
Date Reviewed: June 30, 2003

Purpose
The Board shall provide a comprehensive instructional program to serve the educational needs of all students of this district.

Definition
For the purposes of this policy, a course of study shall be defined as the planned course which consists of at least:

  • a written statement of objectives and their relationship to the academic standards to be achieved by students;
  • content to be used to reach objectives including materials and activities;
  • estimated instructional time to be devoted to achieving the objectives;
  • procedures for measurement of student progress on the objectives; and
  • an explanation of how student grades will be determined.

All planned course objectives shall be derived from the Pennsylvania Academic Standards as specified under Chapter 4 of the State Board of Education regulations.  In the absence of Pennsylvania Academic Standards in final or draft form, appropriate National standards shall be utilized.  The determination of the appropriate linkage between planned course objectives and standards shall be determined by the Superintendent or designee.

Authority
No planned course of study shall be taught in the schools of this district unless it has been adopted by the Board.

Responsibility
The Superintendent is responsible for the continuous evaluation of the efficacy of planned courses of study and shall recommend to the Board such new courses of study as he/she deems to be in the best interests of the students of this district.

  • He/she shall invite the participation of professional staff members at every level in the district in the formulation of his/her recommendation.

The Superintendent's recommendation shall include the following information about the proposed planned course of study:

Its applicability to students.

  • Groups of students to be affected by it.
  • Its rationale in terms of the goals of this district and justification, especially when it is proposed to take the place of an existing planned course of study.
  • The resources that its implementation will require: textbooks, materials, equipment, specially trained personnel.
  • The evaluative methods by which its efficacy will be monitored and measured.

The Superintendent or designee shall maintain a current list of all planned courses of study offered by this district and shall furnish each member of the Board with a copy upon request.

Parents may exercise their right to review a curriculum by directing a written request to their child’s building principal, who will then coordinate a scheduled appointment to fulfill that request.
